rochester with CAKE

Posted in shows, stuff we did by dennis

last night at the armory in rochester, NY, we played our first of five shows with CAKE. the armory is an enormous old building that’s apparently haunted, which is really not surprising given the spooky, cavernous basement where our green room was located. we arrived in plenty of time, had an easy sound check despite the huge natural reverb of the massive hall, and after a few initial food/beer/venue contact concerns, we relaxed and waited for 8 pm when we were to begin our 45 minute set. we got on stage to some of the loudest cheering i’ve ever heard, and played a set that seemed to fly by in seconds. afterwards we of course watched CAKE’s show, the first of 5 we’ll see this week, and we all loved it… it was fun, adventurous, and politically/environmentally aware (they gave away an apple tree to the fan who could guess the percentage of the world’s population that lives without running water). one completely bizarre incident near the end of CAKE’s set: 2 incredibly inebriated girls approached me and in a very strange, almost accusatory way, asked me if i was in the movie legally blonde. i’m not sure what actor they meant, but i made a hasty retreat! anyway, after the show, we all went to jay’s diner in rochester with friends to end the night with some much-needed fried food, and then stayed at a friend’s vacant apartment. today, we had a radio appearance near albany, NY, where we’re playing tomorrow night.
