Birdies: another cavernous rock club. The band members were all carded upon load-in. No drink deal. Owners do not like musicians.
Vess Ruhtenberg (lemonheads) opened with rough-hewn, nihilistic charm on a scrappy acoustic. The friendly crowd cheered him on and welcomed us next.
Our set started rough but settled in a few songs. I was rushing, but still got lost in a soary ‘laughing’, and when Ben and Courtney joined us for ‘folded cloth’ a new height had ben scaled. We made some friends.
KaiserCartel had a charming set as usual made more lively by this show basically being a hometown gig — Courtney grew up here.
Fervor played perhaps the best show of the tour, filling the room with their swoony druglike sound.

polaroids make everything look so cool. these were taken during our recording sessions for what we are tentatively calling the ’secret blue thread EP’. the film flora bought at a tag sale for pennies — really old film, light-leaky and the colors are off but therein lies the magic.

outside the studio, there is a canopy of green that hides a drop of about half a mile to the murky depths below. above, the leaves spread out as large as umbrellas to protect us from the heavy rains and the vampire bats. its an inspiring perch.

Today, we wrapped up the basic tracking for this EP. It went very well I think. During the fleeting moments of down time we discussed the Jew harp, and discovered we share a mutual curiosity concerning the misuses of breast milk.

philip: pianoing

brian: waitin’ and wonderin’

dave: responding to a request to search his luggage

flora: girl in a booth

dennis: preparing to concoct another sonic fable

it’s early in the morning of another day, in fact the final full day, it seems, of recording this small winterpills EP. i’m not sure whether to go back to bed to rest up for recording “the sleeping rapist” or stay awake and do something, or just watch a movie in the sunny living room. it’s been fun up at the studio; i, especially, have been very silly. the guitar parts have been a nice combination of semi-typical of me, and slightly different — i’ve actually used the other channel on my amp for the first time (publicly). good morning.
